Bosbury with Upleadon Division popn 904. John Lodge Vicar.

Endowments: ‘A grammar school free to all who learn Latin, containing from 20 to 25 children; 10 or 12 of whom are instructed gratuitously in reading, writing and arithmetic; the school was founded prior to the reign of Queen Elizabeth, who bequeathed to it an annual stipend of 8l. 4s. 2d.; the master has about 60l. per annum, the produce of lands and houses. The vicar states, the trustees of the above charity have been guilty of great misconduct and neglect of duty, in letting lands and tenements at much less than their value to some of their own body, and two pieces of land are reported to be lost, and there is the same danger impending over more, as the fences are levelled, and there is no distinguishing them from the adjoining land; besides which, the trustees have been very neglectful, in appointing within the last 20 years, three successive masters, incompetent both from character and want of education; and about 19 years ago, the then vicar filed a bill in chancery against the trustees for not appointing a proper master, and for general mismanagement, which suit is not yet ended, but has had one good effect, as the trustees have elected a clergyman to fill the situation.’

Other institutions: ‘Three poor women, in different parts of the parish, take day scholars at 3d. Per week each, amounting in all to 32.’

Observations: ‘The poor have not sufficient means of education; and the vicar suggests, that it would be beneficial if young people, between 14 and 18 years of age, were compelled to come to church every Sunday evening, to be instructed in the principles of the Christian religion; and a Sunday school has dwindled away to nothing, as the farmers would not allow the parish apprentices to attend it.’

Abstract of Answers and Returns relative to the State of Education in England, HC 62 (1835), xli, xlii

p. 342: ‘Bosbury with Upleadon parish (Pop. 1,061) One daily school, wherein 30 males and 5 females receive instruction at the expense of their parents. Two Sunday Schools: in one whereof (Commenced 1829) are 40 males and 45 females, who attend the Established Church; the other consists of 12 children, and appertains to Wesleyans; both schools are supported by contributions. In addition to the above, it is stated “there is a School endowed with land and houses, but that, it having been thrown into Chancery, the revenues are swallowed up by law expenses, the houses dilapidated, the school-room shut up, and that the tenants now refuse to pay the rents”’.
