Wednesday September 25th 1929

In company with PC Morgan (59) to The Farm whilst pickers paid off. Heard casually of a fire at Mr Walter Parker’s The Riddings, Bosbury and proceeded to the scene. Found a French Barn 60 feet by 18 feet which had contained Beans, Hay and Seed Clover all blazing. The fire was observed just before 6 am by W Parker’s son Leslie, who raised the alarm. Ledbury Fire Brigade sent for which arriving about 7 am and unable to do anything owing to no water, returned. The loss about £1000, partly covered by insurance The property belonging to Mr Parker. Made enquiries by Coddington, Mathon to Hollings Hill. Conferred with PC Morgan PC Shakeshaft (15) PC Morris (64) at 11.00am. Continued enquiries by Old Country, Broad Oak and vicinity and returned to station. Visited Old Country Inn Bosbury 12 am.

Thursday September 26th 1929

8 am received Summons from Metro Police (Kings + Rd) Non payment of Income Tax for service on Llewellyn Jones c/o Stanley House Bosbury. To Stanley House to serve summons for Metro police ascertained he had removed to Cradley. Thence in company with PC Morgan (59) to Townend whilst pickers paid off and thence by Peggs Farm, Priors Court and Juggs Green to Staplow making enquiries re gypsies wanted by Monmouth Police Returned by New house to station.

En route received report from Wm Hill, Bailif to Mr E N Pritchett, The Grange, of the loss of a “Brown rough sheep dog” had on trial from Leominster, and answers to the name of “Towser”. As gipsies were suspected owing to some having passed that way made enquiries, traced van by Coddington, Moorend Cross, Cradley and Preston Cross. Overtook “Joseph Lock” Gypsy. Received request from Miss Goodrum, The Bungalow Wellington Heath for me to call to see her By Hollow Lane to The Bungalow, Wellington Heath When Miss Goodrum said she was annoyed about some boys got over her gate (which was locked) to sing carols and wished me to see the parents and caution them. I afterwards saw Mr Barnes, Father of one of the boys, and Mrs Nicholls, mother of the other two boys. They informed me that Miss Goodrum had already spoken to the boys. As no further action will be taken, returned by Hill Top Brickyard to station.

To Cottons Corner re Motor Accident on Ledbury to BromyardRoad. Found a Chevrolet Motor lorry No VJ 2387 half on the greensward on its wrong side facing Ledbury, owned and driven by Edwin Gibbs, Stanley Hill Farm, Bosbury. I took a statement from him and examined the damage. Further along the road and facing the opposite direction I saw the Bread Van No VJ 427 owned and driven by Jesse Howe, Baker, Bosbury. This had been run into by Gibbs as it was going round the corner (right hand). This van had been moved as it blocked all traffic. I took a statement from Jesse Howe and his baker Harry Crump and took particulars of the damage. Afterwards took measurements of quite visible marks on the road, and width of same. Thence to Barlands to serve Tenement Notice on Albert Williams, and returned to station.

On cycle to Ledbury for Town Duty thence to Peggs Farm Bungalow and Juggs Green and Staplow re supposed accident. Interviewed Mrs Emma Taylor aged 74 (who is very deaf). She informed me that as she was walking from Ledbury the previous day, when about half way home she had a sudden attack of faintness, so put her basket down and leaned on her umbrella but collapsed and falling down she remembered no more until she got home having been found by Mr Percy Fletcher (c/o Mr G Hopkins) Ledbury and conveyed there by him in a car. She had a fracture of the right wrist and the right eye was black. I saw the two sons and daughter-in-law who are all certain that the accident was not caused by any vehicle, but was a seizure and no blame attached to anyone. Returned to station
